The faint, almost blurred, image of a woman on an advertisement for a skin-brightening cream contrasts with the bright burst of colours of the ripe bananas. Sri Lanka is known for its fertile soil, its verdant tracts and a bounty of fruits. Despite the island nation’s beauty, patriarchal societies still prevail in many parts. The widespread ideal of coveting fair skin still exists, and can be traced backed to Sri Lanka’s former colonial legacy.
