The photographer captures a picturesque scene on the Madu Ganga, a local watercourse in the Galle district, where a fisherman throws his net, known as ‘baru dal’. The net is a reminder of the colours of a rainbow against the backdrop of a lush jungle. The silent beauty of this moment, reflected in the water, cannot betray the hardship the fishermen face when it comes to earning their livelihoods. However, the people of Sri Lanka strongly and proudly identify with their country and its cultural heritage. Here, professions are largely passed from generation to generation — a tradition followed for centuries, assigning roles to each individual in the social system.
