‘The unusual’, 2016

A young man wearing a cut-out paper mask with feathers confronts the viewer with a penetrative gaze. Historically, masks play an important role in Sri Lankan culture, used in rituals and ceremonies as well as for performing arts. The female photographer explores the idea of disguising oneself, using the mask as a means of transformation. The moment of guise is also indicative of the fact that people posing for photographs often hide their true selves, pretending to be someone else.
