Sri Lankan life is largely dominated by the mighty Indian Ocean surrounding the island nation. Deep harbours have lent the island great strategic importance, making it a major trading hub, and attracting various cultures, languages and ethnicities over the centuries. The sea also plays an important role in Sri Lanka’s folklore and Buddhist mythology. Against the backdrop of the infinite ocean, the human being walking on the beach seems to be but a minuscule part. The individual’s reflections on the waves distort the shape of the body, as if almost dissolving it in the water, giving it back to the elements
